Blueberry Festival History

Located in North Central Indiana, Centennial Park in Plymouth will come alive with the 43rd annual Marshall County Blueberry Festival. Held over Labor Day weekend the Blueberry Festival is one of the Midwest's premier events and has been named a "Top 100 Event" in North American by the American Bus Association in 1997, 1999 and again in 2007.

In 1966, the Plymouth Jaycees organized a Labor Day Celebration for Marshall County, to observe Indiana's sesquicentennial. The celebration was so successful a group of citizens formed a board of directors, to organize an annual festival. With Marshall County providing one third of Indiana's Blueberry Crop at the time, the board chose to call the festival, The Marshall County Blueberry Festival. Who knew this humble celebration would grow to be Indiana's largest four-day festival.

The Blueberry Festival's main objectives are; to provide quality family activities at little or no cost, and a venue for Marshall County's many Not-for-Profit to raise funds. Most organizations that participate are able to generate all their operating costs for the year from the profits made at the festival.

Craft, Commercial & Food Vendors are an integral part of the Blueberry Festival. Over 300 craft vendors from all across the United States showcase their goods. Local and regional businesses take the opportunity to promote their products and services in the commercial area. And what would a festival be without food. With 100 booths to choose from there is a tasty treat for everyone. Of course blueberries are in abundance especially in our non-for-profit area. These groups offer the very best in blueberry delights like blueberry pie, blueberry ice cream, blueberry shakes, sundaes, donuts, blueberry cheesecake and just plain blueberries!

Sports activities abound all four days of the festival from youth to adult activities including softball, tennis, volleyball, arm wrestling, garden tractor pulls, horse pull, kiddie tractor pedal pull. Annual events such as the Hoosier Old Wheels Antique Car Show, the wildly popular Blueberry Stomp 5K/15K run, Bicycle Cruise, hot air balloon launches and glow, the fabulous Labor Day Parade, Historic Americana, and the spectacular fireworks display. Enjoy entertainment on 3 stages all weekend long, there is not cost or reservations needed. Other events and activities take place all weekend long in the community as well, (see festival schedule page).
